Chapter 32

Nate didn’t speak right away. He had an odd look on his face, one Rusty couldn’t decipher. At first he met Rusty’s gaze, but then he turned and looked at the windshield, through which nothing much was visible beyond the battle between raindrops and wiper blades.

The long, still moment that followed seemed to Rusty both too silent and too full of the sounds of rain, cars on the road, and Nate’s quiet breathing. He was tempted to say something, if only to break the spell.
