If they did it right—if Dryath did it right—Genthry would be too broken to lift a finger in his own defense.

Of course the first time he showed any weakness it was about a child—the kind of thing any reasonable person would get upset about. Hell, if Dryath had seen what Genthry claimed he’d seen he’d probably have had a similar reaction. Wouldn’t he?

Everyone knew what went on with slaves. If a slaveowner had certain tastes, he had the right to indulge them. At least, the law said so.

Dryath bit down on the inside of his cheek. It wasn’t up to him to decide who had which legal rights. He, and others like him, were the line between order and chaos. Let the lawyers fight about who had which rights. When the laws changed he’d happily enforce the new ones, and cheer about it too.

Right now, though, he had to escape from this chair.
