Chapter 37

“I think I need to—to get some rest,” he spoke softly.

Ken nodded, but she didn’t immediately move. Instead, her hand outstretched and touched the dark stone lying against his chest. “Without this, I think.” When he hesitated, “I’ll keep it safe. I promise. But I think you need to put it down, at least for a while.”

She was right. Though he wanted to keep the stone—hell, sleeping without it felt wrong—the temptation to meet with his imagined love would be too great. And he couldn’t think up another valuable use for the talisman that could trump the danger it represented. He needed to detox, to sleep normally, and to break free from the hold he let the crystal have over him. With trembling hands, he removed the necklace and carefully gave it to his daughter.

“If you’re thinking about using it, don’t,” he warned. “It’s addictive. And when you can create whatever you want, after a while, everything else doesn’t compare.”
