He snorted. “She’s not here. What are you, a new girlfriend?”

Kenna practically fell over, as much from the shock of being called such a thing as from exhaustion. “What? No, no. I’m a—I’m a friend. Just a friend. Where can I find her? It’s important.”

“Pawn shop. Over on the four-oh-five. She couldn’t make rent this month.” Scoffing, he wobbled in place a little. “Surprise, surprise. Not much call for musicians these days, and the dumb cunt won’t get a real job.”

Convenient, since Kenna had the perfect career opportunity for her. “Aren’t jobs scarce around here, anyway?” she inquired for the sake of learning more than what an eleven-year-old could tell her. The problems in this city had gone under her group’s radar, likely since they were focused entirely on magical events. But it made sense that, with a public that recognized but could do nothing about magic, there would be other consequences.
