Chapter 57

“Keep alert,” Kenna instructed as she drew her handgun. “Take out one of your knives and keep a good grip on it. If this goes south, I want you to turn around and run like hell back to the truck, okay?”

“What?”

Ken knew this would be a problem, which was exactly why she waited until now to bring it up. Producing her car keys, she pressed them into Yuuki’s hand. “You’re not a fighter. I can’t protect you if I’m dead. So, if something happens, you need to get out of here. Go back to Colorado. Tell Adelaide what happened. There’s no reason for you to die, too.” She cleared her throat. “It probably won’t come to that, but just in case. Can you promise me?”

“I’m not sure—”

“Yuuki, please.”

She sighed. “Okay. Umm, yeah, I promise. But I’m not leaving you if I can help it.”

Ken silently noted that Yuuki could make an excellent assistant with an attitude like that. Willing to save herself, but loyal. “Good,” she replied simply.
