He shrugged and absently filled up the needle. “I dunno. They gave me some food. Said it was my last meal. I passed out right after. I think—I think maybe it was drugged. When I woke up, it, uh—fuck, it was licking me. It was licking the blood off my face.” With a nervous breath, he injected himself through his pants’ leg. He set the medicine down in his lap, reached into his mouth, and pulled his lips back to reveal missing teeth. “Courtesy of our new friends.” He sniffed, as though to swallow the blood of days past that most certainly flowed when his teeth were removed. “I hit it, as hard as I could, in the face, and it backed off for a while. But I could still hear it, moving around. That’s when I broke the plate.”

“That’s terrifying.” Ken couldn’t think of anything else to say.
