They left because there were no resources here. The fear of being cut off forced them into action. Some probably just went one or two towns over, where they could be assured access to basic necessities. Staying with family or friends. Others may have gone farther. He could imagine people making a break for either national border, since there seemed to be more problems in the U.S. than anywhere else.


Regardless, the end result was a ghost town. What few residents remained seemed to stay in their houses or keep to themselves.


Dakota thought that perhaps they could use the migration to their advantage.


Though his muscles were still a bit stiff, and he experienced a consistent ache in at least a dozen places, he’d become far more mobile. His own room, once a sanctuary, felt somewhat like a prison, so he made regular trips downstairs to converse with the others, watch TV, or look out the window. And he started cooking for himself again.
