Chapter 39

While he did that, he sang along with “The Chipmunk Song,” and then “I’m Getting’ Nuttin’ for Christmas.”

On his next trip down to his car, he took the little tree and placed it carefully on the floor behind the driver’s seat, which was back far enough to give him some leg room. He’d left the ornaments in place, and he didn’t want them to fall off. Then he returned to the laundry room, transferred the sheets to the drier, and climbed the stairs to his apartment.

He really didn’t have much in the way of material possessions. The gifts he’d purchased over the years would be waiting for Ransom when his lover returned home. They fit into the suitcase with enough room to spare for the photos and the magnets that had been on the fridge. As he’d surmised, the bookcase tipped onto its back made a perfect holder for his action figures. It was awkward, but he managed to carry it down to the car and fit it on the back seat.
