Chapter 58

Looking at the ground in front of his feet, Adam shuffled along beside Witze to the building. Pausing, Witze turned back and glanced at them over his shoulder.

“I’ll get some food going.”

Witze reached around Adam and slid the key in the lock, opening the door. He gave Adam a gentle shove, getting the young man through the door and closing it behind him.

Todd watched quietly as Nick took the reins of two of the horses and led them to the small barn. Todd shoved the door open and followed, taking the other horse. They worked for a few minutes in silence, getting the animals unsaddled and bedded down with food and water.

Nick kept glancing Todd’s way but refused to let his eyes meet Todd’s. His hands shook, and Todd didn’t have to pay close attention to see how Nick fidgeted and looked around the space, checking out the small windows near the top of the stalls every few minutes.

Finally, they were finished. Todd wiped his hands on his jeans and nodded at the building.
