He took a deep breath and held it.

Jah’lar became a blur of motion as Nick shouted a warning. Todd’s throat closed, the gun clattered to the floor, and he dropped to his knees beside it. It was happening too fast; Todd hadn’t expected the world to get fuzzy around the edges so quickly.

Fortunately, they’d prepared the area with well-placed traps and weapons for what Todd hoped was any situation. Nick’s yelp got through, and Todd managed to turn and focus on his mate.

Sliding off the desk and lurching at Jah’lar, Nick ground out the words, “You’re not hurting him.” He grabbed Jah’lar’s forearms with both hands. Nick’s head dropped until his chin was nearly touching his chest, long bangs flopping back and forth. Nick gritted his teeth together, shouting wordlessly through them.
