Todd grabbed Nick’s wrist, and they bolted down the alley, and instead of going left at the end as he’d planned earlier, Todd swerved right. They’d have to cut back to their escape route or find another one. He was too afraid the path Adam had helped them lay out was a trap.
They barely made it a few blocks before they saw a patrol. Skidding to a stop, Nick grabbed Todd’s coat and tugged him down a side street. More soldiers came from the opposite end of the street before they’d barely gone a half dozen yards.
The buildings here were too close together to cut between, and there were no houses and yards to run through. Raleigh’s soldiers had known too much of where the Rugers were trying to go, and there were only so many ways to get out of that section of the city.
In minutes, they were surrounded and confronted. The captain stepped forward, hand on her sidearm snugged in her hip holster.
“Todd and Nick Ruger.”
