Chapter 21

“On the count of three,” Jack breathed into Rob’s ear, “you shift. Okay?”

Rob tensed, and squeezed his eyes shut as another wave of pain rippled through him. He nodded wordlessly in the affirmative.

“Good.” Jack’s chin rested on Rob’s shoulder, his breath hot against Rob’s neck. “Remember, on the count of three. One…two…”

As ‘three’ rang in Rob’s ears, Jack’s arms tightened and he was jerked backwards into the water. Rob felt himself shifting, shortening into his otter form. Jack had shifted with him, and his sturdy frame supported Rob’s as they floated out into deeper water.

At first, Rob remained wound tight with fear, but Jack didn’t loosen his firm grip. Once they were out past the waves, in the cool, still depths, Rob allowed himself to relax against the sturdy chest that supported him. He rested his paws lightly on top of Jack’s, and opened his eyes to gaze up at the stars.
