Chapter 33

“I have to go to work in the morning.”

“When did you get a job?”

“Tonight when Christopher offered me one.”

The ensuing silence crept so long, he was tempted to ask if Bodie was still there. Then, he heard the whisper of breath, and wondered what Bodie was doing.

“Don’t tell me this is just his way of taking care of you, Gage.”

“I told him I was worried about running out of money. And about how I didn’t want to have to crawl back home. He said he needed help around the store.”

“You didn’t tell me you were worried about running out of money.” Bodie actually sounded hurt. “If you need a loan, I can float you the cash. You don’t have to go to work for Christopher.”

“I’d rather work and earn my keep, honestly. But…look, I know you don’t like this. Is there anything I can do to make it more palatable for you?”

More silence. He wasn’t used to that with Bodie. Bodie liked conversation, even when it wasn’t about anything in particular.
