“Not in the way you think,” he said. “He’s going to start working part-time in the store. So, see? It wasn’t a date. It was a job interview.”

Rev laughed. For what felt like an eternity. “Are you serious? Oh my God, I can’t waitto see this.”

“What? There’s nothing to see. He needed a job, I could use the help, end of story.”

“You’ve got yourself so twisted up in knots over this boy. I understand why you don’t see it. This never happens to you. But it happens to me all the time and I know the signs.”

Christopher scrubbed his hand over his face. He wanted to argue with Rev. Rev was absolutely wrong about what the night had been about. However, he wasn’t wrong about Christopher’s reaction to Gage. He hadbeen tied up in knots, ever since Power. Denying his desire got harder each time he saw Gage, but he was determined not to let it win, regardless of what Rev seemed to think.
