Chapter 50

“Wait here,” the man said and disappeared inside the building. Several minutes later, he was back. Returning the folder to Todd, he said, “The chancellor is expecting you.”

Todd glanced back at Nick and gave his head a jerk toward the door. Nick was off the horse and beside Todd in a few seconds. Turning on his heels, Todd said to the soldiers, “We know the way.”

Three of the soldiers followed them up to the office anyway and waited until Clarke sent them away.

“I’ve just been reviewing the reports of the attack. You two were lucky,” Clarke said. He stood and motioned to the chairs near his desk with one hand, heaving a sigh when Todd simply crossed his arms over his chest and glared.

Nick groaned, huffed, and dropped into one of the chairs, mumbling, “My shoulder hurts.”
