Chapter 40

“Look, I gotta get going. I can’t control what you do, Belle. Sometimes I wish I could, but I can’t. Mark my words, though: Nothing good is going to come of this—not your pursuit of your grandfathers’ estates, and certainly not your attempt to bring Jade and Ms. Martinez together. You see, people like them are different from you and me. They don’t need to be loved. But then, I wonder if you really understand what love is.”

Belle decided to put her hurt aside momentarily—for all her superficiality, she was capable of being moved, especially by the few she loved dearly—to concentrate on the plan at hand. And soon she saw her opportunity to put it in motion on an unseasonably warm day on which she got her period—a sure-fire sign that she would be sick. God must be smiling on her, she thought, else why would the planets align so beautifully?
