“I’m sorry, babe. It’s just that it’s so insane. Don’t you worry,” she said, her voice suddenly edgy with anger. “I’ll take care of little miss. In the meanwhile, I think it’s best if you stay away from her and the manor house.”

“She can rot there for all I care,” Jade said.

“Oh, don’t be like that. You know she’s just angry at you for punishing her and because she thinks you’re standing in the way of her one shot at happiness as lady of the manor. Believe me when I say I’ll talk some sense into her. I know Paris will help. Then I’ll come over and give you a nice massage.”

“I’m grateful for all you’re doing, all you’ve done,” Jade said. “But I really need to be alone for a while. I need some time to think.”

But Jade couldn’t rest.

He could lose it all—and for what? What had he done? What had he ever done except protect what little remained of his mother and father in this world?

He took a seldom-used back road out of the property and onto a main drag that led to the highway.
