“Anyway, I thought you were adorable. I asked Hunt about you. He’s a good friend to you, you know. He refused to tell me anything beyond the fact that you were majoring in interior design, that your family disapproved, and that I was too old for you.”

“You’re not!”

“Thank you, but the truth of the matter is I am twice your age.”

I didn’t care, but before I could say as much, he continued.

“He wouldn’t say anything else for the longest time. I could have forced him to talk. I hold the papers on Georg’s.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No, I wouldn’t do something like that to him for being a good friend.”

“I knew it! You can’t fool me. You’re one of the good guys.”

He turned his head and raised an eyebrow. Why was it everyone could do that except me?

“Now, go on. What did you do?”

“Finally, I told him I could hire a private detective—”

“You would have?” My voice came out breathless, and how gauche was that?

“And you find that…what?”
