He smiled at me. “I don’t have any children, if that’s what you’re wondering about.”

“All right.” I blew out a sigh of relief. “So this is just a hypothetical girl child?”

“Yes.”

“Elliot Wyndham had two girls,” Granddad observed.

“Oh, was one of those the Aunt Imogene you spoke of, Hyde?”

“Yes. My father was the only son, and I was his only son. I do have a couple of uncles on my mother’s side who have daughters.”

“So we can get the girl from you and the boy from me.” I was pleased to have it settled so neatly.

Geoff stared from me to Hyde and back, and I could tell something was bothering him.

“Geoff? Haven’t you and Mindy talked about having children?”

“Uh…yes. She’s looking forward to it.”

Granddad’s smile was tinged with sadness. “I’d love to still be around to see your child, Kipp.”

“And Geoff’s, too, right, Granddad?”
