Chapter 23

He had hung up the phone, rolling his eyes.

And now, as he walked toward the busier downtown and saw people, and especially couples, crowding the streets of downtown Evanston, he thought the movie might be a lot more fun if he had someone else sitting beside him.

He knew it was last minute and promised himself he wouldn’t get his hopes up, but he paused in an office building doorway to pull out his cell phone and punch in Jay Blackstock’s number.

The phone chirped several times before Jay snagged it off his bedside table, just before the call went to voice mail. He looked at the display and reached over to mute the volume on a porno playing on his plasma screen.

“Hunter?” Jay grinned. “It’s good to hear from you. What’s up?”

“Well, um, I was just on my way to a movie here in Evanston and thought of you. I know it’s very last minute, but I wondered if you wouldn’t like to join me. I figure you could still make it before the movie started.”
