Chapter 41

“Mr. Beaumont…” Domenic stood finally in front of him, wheezing a little from his climb. “You ‘bout ready to get goin’?”

“I think so. Did you get all the stuff out of the kitchen? Were you careful with the china?”

“Oh yeah, we handle that stuff with kid gloves. No worries.”

Hunter stepped into the hallway, surprised at how quickly his home had become an empty house. He wanted to get away from the sound of their hollow voices. “Well, Mr. Caputo, if you’re sure we’ve got everything—”

“Then let’s go!”

Domenic stepped back to allow Hunter to precede him down the stairs. At the bottom, Hunter turned and almost ran smack into Domenic’s formidable belly.

“Oh! I’m sorry. But I forgot something upstairs. I’ll be just a sec. Go on ahead. I’ll be right out.”

Hunter took the stairs two at a time, eager now to be free of the house and its memories. He hadn’t meant to leave the photo of Beaumont House behind. It would give him a goal to strive for.
