Chapter 61

“Can you spell the last name, sir?”

“Burt. B-u-r-t.”

“One moment.”

Hunter heard a click and then listened to dead air. There was another click and then a faint buzzing. Hunter realized he’d been connected to Michael’s room and was about to hang up when the phone was picked up.

“Hello.” Michael’s deep voice was unmistakable.

Mentally Hunter cried “Shit!” but stayed quiet, holding the phone to his ear. The sensation of being watched strengthened, and Hunter looked around him, even if he knew he would see nothing. It was as if eyes were peering at him from several different directions in the room.

“Hello?” Michael repeated. Hunter wondered if there was caller ID. He clutched the phone, stomach churning, unsure of what to say.

“Anybody there?” Michael shouted into the phone.

Hunter held on to the phone until he heard a dial tone.
