Chapter 76

Feeling his face heat, Rory explained the earlier conversation. Turning to Betsy, he added, “And, yes, he is.”

Rory was happy. He leaned against Zane’s side. Zane’s right arm was loosely wrapped around Rory as Zane effortlessly controlled the wheel with his left hand. The truck’s cab was warm, it was dark outside, and soft country music played quietly on the radio.

“Glad you got a truck with bench seating,” Rory said.

“Me, too.” Zane gave Rory a squeeze. “Saw how much Barry likes his so told my dad that was what I wanted.”

“Like the colors, too.”

Zane reached up and ruffled Rory’s hair. “When I saw it I knew this baby was mine.”

Rory smiled to himself, privately hoping the words applied to him as well as the truck.

Zane took a right turn and they began to travel down a rutted road.

“Where are we going?”

Zane didn’t answer. About a minute later he stopped the truck and shut off the engine.

“Don’t tell me we’ve run out of gas,” Rory joked.
