Chapter 24

All at once, Travis couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t see straight. He couldn’t think. At least, not about anything other than the pain that shot through his body, quick and hard and he would have screamed if it didn’t disappear when the shade withdrew. The only reason he didn’t collapse had to be because of Niko’s protection.

He gasped for air, attempting to stand up straight again and searching his body for a wound. There were tears through his shirt, but nothing more than that. None that he could see, anyway.

“P-please,” Niko said, weakening and beginning to shake. Not to Travis but to the shade. “Don’t hurt h-him. He’s trying to…to help you.” As he spoke, Travis tried again. “You feel so a-alone. Abandoned. We won’t do that to…to you. We can help. Let us help. Just, please, don’t hurt him.”

This time, a few specks of that light remained, floating within the shade. Those specks flickered but stayed lit.
