I grabbed her plate and mine. “I got it, Mom.” I smiled, trying to be happy. Deep down, I wasn’t. I’d already figured she’d never accept my relationship with David. Today only confirmed it.

After finishing the dishes, I snuck upstairs to peek inside David’s room. But before I could even open the door, I heard him talking to someone, probably on the phone.
