Chapter 55

It drained away, into the floor as quick as it came. The light dimmed around Haziel’s legs before it left. His lover was sitting on the floor, pristine. The weight of sadness lifted off Zeke and felt limp gratefulness in its place. “Thank you.”13

“Zeke?” Haziel was looking at him with this dumbfounded expression on his face.

Zeke had never been so happy to see someone before in his life. If the damned barrier wasn’t in the way, he’d have gone to Haziel’s side and kissed the breath out of him, secure in knowing it wasn’t a problem.

His angel seemed to read his mind. He crawled across the space between them in a mad dash of arms, legs, wings, and bowled Zeke over. Haziel crushed him in his arms, panting out the incomparable music of his native language, words Zeke didn’t know, but a sentiment he understood. Zeke just clutched him close, tattered shirt and feathers and skin, trying to absorb the feeling of his lover safe and alive.
