Chapter 59

The skeptical look he got almost made Zeke squirm, but he sat in the small brown recliner next to the couch to suppress the urge. Jim ignored the drink in favor of giving Zeke a cool once over. Zeke reddened under his friend’s stare. “What?”

“You don’t look like you had a resting vacation,” Jim said, blunt. Most of the time, Jim’s unvarnished words were great. He forgot how much he hated it when Jim’s observations were about him. “Looks like you went a few rounds with a bear.”

Well, okay, that’s definitely what Zeke felt like. Celestial modes of transportation were hell on humans, Zeke decided. Or maybe just on him. Either way, Jim wasn’t wrong.

“I think I picked up a cold or something while I was there.” It was the most believable lie he had. They were both medical professionals, who knew how easy it was to get sick from the smallest things. “Honestly, I’m fine. Vacation was great. Went to see the Grand Canyon and everything.”
