Back at the bookshop, Simon was holding an audience spellbound with the second of The Lady’s Choice, the part in which Lady Caroline declared her intention to hold a competition amid Regency-era London gentlemen for the honor of being her suitor. Lady Caroline did not expect any of them to complete the challenges, naturally; she’d prefer to remain unwed. Ben propped a shoulder against a shelf of young-adult fantasy novels and listened with the kind of pride that came from recognition and pleasure.
