“Arielle, we have to do this. I don’t want to cause you any more problems, any more embarrassment. We have to end this now, before all these problems come between us.”

“End it? I thought we were just putting things on hold. What are you saying?”

I had not meant to use the word ‘end it.’ But really, that was the way I was feeling right now. There was no hope for us.

“Goodbye, Arielle. Hopefully, I’ll be back one day when I’m more of a success. When I’m worthy of you.”

The last thing I remember of that night was looking over my shoulder to see her standing in the hallway, jaw open in total shock.

I chose to walk home again, wanting to sort out what had just happened. I knew I had done the right thing, and so did not answer the roughly dozen phone calls I received from Arielle. I passed by the casino once more. I was tempted to go in, but I was low on cash and remembered how badly it had turned out the last time. I went home and cried myself to sleep.16
