Neither of us slept that night, the enormity of our undertaking completely taking over our thoughts, though we did hold onto each other tightly the whole night. This was our one chance for a happy life together.

Or for total disaster.21

We awoke early the next morning, skipping breakfast, just having a cup of the awful coffee the machine in the room made to steady our nerves before venturing out carrying all this money. The first thing I did was return my car, then we took a taxi to the dealership. Jean Claude was indeed already there.

“Don’t tell him everything right away,” I advised. “Just start a casual conversation, like maybe you’ve come to tell him you’re giving two weeks’ notice that you’re leaving your job to come with me, or something like that. We don’t know if he’s going to be willing to help us. He may tell us to take the bag back to the casino, which is what we would do if we had an ounce of common sense.”

“Ounce?”
