“Okay.”
She must’ve seen the way he held his breath. How he contorted his face to keep from doing the one thing she asked him not to do today.
“Hey, hey. You promised.”
“I know I did, but…” His voice cracked. Colin needed to break that promise. “Mama, please, can I cry?”
“Oh, Sweet Pea.” She cupped his cheek. “Sure you can.”
Colin wrapped his arms around her and let it out. Tears that he held in since this morning, last night maybe—for months even. Lena tucked him in close. She ran her hands over his back the way she did when he was younger and whispered words of comfort. Words that weren’t true, but needed to be said anyway.
“Mama,” Colin whimpered. “I don’t want you to leave me.”
She kept her hold on him as tight as she could.
“I only have one reason to stay. It’s the only reason I need. I would, Sweet Pea, for you.”
“I love you so much.”
