People were there, Colin thought, somewhere in the far off distance. Someone put their hand on Colin’s shoulder. He shook it off, blubbering something about leaving him alone with Mama. The hand came back.


“Please…” Colin sobbed. “I want her back.”


“I know, Colin. But you gotta let them do their job.”


Colin lifted his head and turned. Medical staff moved all around, people here to collect Ma’s body and take her away. He looked up to the one talking to him.


“Shaun…” Colin’s voice cracked. “She’s gone.”


“I’m so sorry, Colin.” He held his arms out to him and Colin fell into them. Started to wail and couldn’t stop.
