And maybe there would not be. But Arliss had been alone most of his life. If Sean kicked him to the curb, as he had every right to do, he would somehow manage to go on. He turned onto his side and drew his knees up to his chest.

As soon as Sean plugged the phone back in, it started ringing again. He didn’t think he had the strength to get back on the arguing wheel with Arliss once more. Everything that could be said had already been said.

They were at a standstill.

But when he looked down at the Caller ID, he saw it was not Arliss at all.

It was his mother.

Sean debated whether to take the call. In the space of a few rings he counseled himself, acknowledging that his mother was not the old-fashioned type, that in fact she was probably more hip and liberal in her views than he was. When he was struggling with coming out, his mother, Janine, had already been attending PFLAG meetings.

But he didn’t know if he was ready to talk to her.
