“Sorry,” she muttered. She cut up the seam, exposing more of the man’s calf. The shadow Kenneth cast at her side was thick and heavy, heavy enough for her to feel in her bones. “Why don’t you get out of those wet things and warm up? Before I have two patients on my hands.”

“Ma’am? I don’t have any dry clothes to wear. I can help, though. Tell me what to do.”

She didn’t want help. She wanted her quiet evening back. But Amy gritted her teeth and nodded, dipping her rag into the water and soaking it.

“First of all, take your hat off when you’re inside my house. I can’t splint this until we get the swelling down. That means wrapping this in hot bandages and keeping him immobile. Get some more water and heat it in the fire. Woody, show him where the bowls are, then go grab an extra blanket from the chest and lay it out in front of the fire.”
