Chapter 9

“Just remember she’s a nice ladywho probably saved your life.”

Leon’s smile only widened. “Oh, but it’s the ladies who’ll always surprise you, Kenny boy. Because you expect ‘em to act one way, and then they invite you out into the barn for a few hours away from the prim and proper.”

“You can tell me more of your theory after she goes to bed and she isn’t just a few feet away, okay?”

Leon chuckled, but the laughter cut off with a grunt of pain when he attempted to shift on his pallet. Amy’s head whipped around at the sound, her knowing eyes searching for any signs of his discomfort.

“You need to be still,” she chastised. “It’s too soon to be jostling that ankle around so much.”

Leon looked suitably scolded. “Yes, ma’am.”

Her gaze went to Kenneth. “I’m going to warm water for some laundry. Can you help get the worst of his clothes off so I can wash them? Yours, too. That way, they can dry overnight, and you won’t miss them too much because you’ll be bundled under the blankets.”
