Testing Woody on the matter didn’t help at all. At her carefully worded question about how he felt about Kenneth, her son immediately brightened. All he could talk about was all the things Kenneth was doing for him, things his father would have done if he’d lived. He even expressed interest in knowing what Kenneth’s home and family were like.
He never did that with her own family. Or Ernest’s. That told Amy all she needed to know.
It took eight days for her to work up her courage, and even then she waited until Leon had drifted asleep before slipping out of bed and into the warmer main room.
As soon as Kenneth saw her, he untangled himself from the makeshift bed on the floor and stood without disturbing Leon.
“I thought you were asleep.”
