Chapter 57

She shook her head and shrugged. “To be honest, I really don’t know. He’s never bothered me or hindered me, but I’ve never been sure if he supported me either. I think he’s just what he says, a riverboat captain. I never wanted to test that theory, however. If he knew anything about the weapons being moved, he, or any of the other riverboat crew, never let on.”

“Let’s get up to the billiards parlor and see if we can get any information about the dead body,” Todd said.

They spent a few minutes gathering what they’d found and packed it all in the strongbox. They took it to Nick and Todd’s stateroom, leaving it with the rest of their trunks.

The large hall outside the billiards parlor had small groups of people milling about and whispering among themselves. Todd and Nick walked quietly amid the groups, trying to listen in on conversations.

“What’s going on?” Todd asked a couple Nick recognized from the previous evenings’ poker games.
