Witze nodded. “Understood. I have a wagon at the depot.”
“Thank God,” Nick mumbled.
Todd chuckled and added, “You can have these horses and their gear. Other than the saddlebags, those are ours. There will be a woman, another sentry—her name is Heidi Maverick, though sometimes she goes by Heidi Larue—a day or so behind us. She specializes in demons.”
Nick led the horses to the wagon, tying them to the back. As he and Todd walked to the side of the wagon, he nudged his mate. “You didn’t warn him about Heidi or the horses.”
Todd glanced back as he climbed in. “We’ll surprise him.”
As they’d done on the boat, Todd and Nick fell into their roles. Even though they used the same names, their adopted personas were vastly different.
It wasn’t until the next afternoon that Heidi arrived at the Chancellor’s Estate. As part of Todd’s official undercover capacity, it was his job to meet and determine admittance for all guests.
