Chapter 73

“I’ll see they’re caught and returned to their owners.” Heidi patted his arm. “You are both good sentries. Seeing you possibly arrested and unable to work will do no one any good. Now, I hate good-byes. It’s been fun, we’ll do it again sometime, but get lost.”

Taking Nick’s arm before either one could argue or reconsider, Todd nodded to Heidi. “We’ll be in touch. Be careful.” Todd led the way as he and Nick melted into the woods.

Nick poked at the small fire they’d built and glanced up at the night sky. A few wisps of cloud crossed over but didn’t obscure the stars. He leaned back on his elbows and yawned. Todd was stretched on his back a foot or so away, his hat over his face.

“We’ll be at Jimmy’s place by this time tomorrow. We’ll borrow a wagon to get the rest of the way home,” Todd said.

Nick looked over at him. “I thought you were asleep.”

“I was.” Todd snorted. “You think too loud. That boy died the minute Jah’lar took him over.”
