Chapter 16

“I’ll meet with Paulo,” Daniel said slowly.

Kar’s eyes locked on him. “What did you say?” he asked as though Daniel spoke an unintelligible language.

Unable to meet those coffee-colored eyes, Daniel directed his answer to the hardwood floor. “You’ve wasted enough time here. You can take me to meet Paulo. Today,” he added the last word with a bit of bravado he did not feel.

Before Karden could answer, Jazz and Maddy emerged from the back room and began a combination of fussing, nagging, and examining Daniel. Knowing Maddy had been called on to pilot a medical helicopter for a while, he felt safe letting him patch up the heel, while Jazz pressed ice to the bump on his head. “Should we take him to the hospital?” she asked her husband.

Maddy looked at Daniel. “I would say he could just tell us if he feels dizzy or had trouble with his vision, but we bothknow he doesn’t think about himself,” he said.

Jazz nodded in agreement. “He does have a hint of white savior complex,” she said.
