Instead of the rat-a-tat machine-gun assault he’d given the door on his last visit, he rapped on Gordy’s door with a single knuckle. Then he immediately went back to the kitchen towel in his grip and scrubbed at hands that were already dry.

A quick burst of sound followed the knock and Leo leaned into the door, trying to figure out just what in the hell he’d heard. While the transfer of sound between door and hallway was nothing compared to what it was from floor to ceiling, the sound had still been quite definite. What it had been, however, was anybody’s guess.
