Chapter 22

“Okay, okay, Belinda, we get it.” Leo walked to the door. “Call me if you need anything at all.”

“Anything,” Gordy said with a smile, finally looking into Leo’s eyes.

“Absolutely anything.” Leo opened the door. “Anytime. Anywhere.”

Gordy snorted. “Got it.”

“Not yet,” Leo said, grinning. He stopped in the hallway and turned back to face Gordy. “But I figure if I keep trying, you just might.”

“Yeah.” Gordy put his hand on the door. “I might.” Without so much as a wave, he closed the door.

“But he was smiling,” Leo whispered. He shoved open the fire door. “All hope is not lost yet, boys,” he told the empty stairwell, voice booming like a drill sergeant. “After all, only the fool believes bamboo grows ninety feet in five weeks.”

“Hello?”

Leo jumped at the voice and peeked over the railing at the same time that a blue-grey-haired head popped over from below. “Whoops. I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were there.”
