When he let her go, she touched his cheek briefly. “That doesn’t actually change the fact that I can’t do it though. No magic, remember?”

“You’re wrong. It’s in you. Believe in your dreams even if you won’t trust what we can sense.”

“My dreams are telling me Celeste leaves you and Simon in bloody pieces. I don’t want to believe those are real.”

“But they are. She flayed his back open until he hung on the rack like a piece of meat. And I might not have been under her whip, but I bled just as much when I saw it. Tell me you will at least try. For Simon’s sake if not mine.”

Love for Simon scorched his gaze. How could she have ever mistrusted him? “I told you I would. But it’s going to take some time.”

“For you to go through Antonio’s records and find what you need?”

She laughed. “Grandfather was a wreck when it came to keeping track of things.”

“Then what are you going to do?”
