But then she closed her mouth as the realization that she needed proof the women were being mistreated hit her. And, hard on the heels of that came the knowledge that she couldn’t seek the vampire herself. Her nose simply wasn’t good enough.

“Yes, all right,” she murmured. “They’re all part of a homeless women’s’ shelter in the area. We can visit. Maybe even talk to the vampire and see if he or she lies.” She couldn’t help adding, “But you will follow my lead. If I tell you to run, you run. Got it?” And she glared at Rose.

“Right to the authorities if it seems necessary.”

A little soothed, Ama moved away from the wall. “We should…” When she saw the intent look on Rose’s face, she stopped. “What?”

“I just wanted to make sure you knew that the authorities would be called to save you as well as anyone else involved. I’ve laid a small claim on you, and I won’t let that go easily.”
