Even if some of them could sometimes prevent the death by a power that wasn’t fully understood. All that was known was that it didn’t work on everyone and sometimes what the person lived through after being saved from death was worse than dying.
But this is a new country, with new rules and new…everything. Unable to say that and have any hope of keeping this civil, Ama said simply, “All right, Mother. Where did you scare her off to?”
“She left. Of her own accord. I don’t know which way she went.”
DC wasn’t dangerous to a single wolf the way it was to a human on their own. Rose would be perfectly safe.
Unless, of course, that damned vampire made good on his threat.
Ama headed for the door.
“Where are you going?”
“Back to St. Francis.”
“Isn’t it closed for the night?”
“There’s always work to be done at a charity. You taught me that.” She bit off the words and hoped only that her sarcasm wouldn’t carry, just the anger.
