Chapter 26

Awkward

“So now you’re in the city?” Derek asked. “How are you sleeping? Are you eating?”

I stared out the window. Not much of a view. “Yeah, don’t worry, Der. I picked up some stuff at the market. As for the sleeping part…Well, you know me.”

Derek was quiet.

“Baby, how are you?”

“Well, let’s see, I didn’t set the loft on fire yet. Didn’t forget to turn off the faucet after I brushed my teeth this morning. So, yeah, I’m good.”

“Sarcasm is a bad color on you.”

“Is it? I’m sorry…Hey, I was at Split all day. Got a lot done.”

“You were working all day?”

“Yep. And, by the way, Myles is like a fish in water down there. He’s a quick learner.” He chuckled. “Almost as quick as you. Better watch out. He might become indispensable around here.”

“Hmm. Interesting. But please, don’t overwork yourself, okay?”

“I read through the papers you sent me,” he said, ignoring my comment. “Most of them are exchanges between third parties. City council and the ministry.”
