“Nathan used to get like that with me,” Derek said, after a minute.
Nathan Ross. His ex-boyfriend. The man Der was going to marry before I came back into his life. I hated to think about that time.
“But, you see, I used to shove him right back. ‘Cause my Aunt Fran had taught me to stand up for myself. But Lene says Myles never fights back. He just…walks away. From anything or anyone he thinks will turn from him first.”
“He’s afraid of not being worth a fight.”
“You’ve been so wonderful in the last weeks.” Derek slowly slid his hand under my T-shirt. “I feel like we’re falling in love again.”
“Yeah, well, you’ve been giving me a shitload of compliments lately. Got me feeling like a king around here.”
He kissed my neck, right under my ear, giving me a chill. “You said you had a little fuel for me…Remember?”
“Oh, baby, I can barely stay awake.”
He moved away, lying on his back. “It’s okay,” he said, not convincingly. “Good night.”
