“Red and me have a date.” Boone grabbed Derek and shook him gently. “Or did you forget, you little shit?”

Derek’s eyes widened. “Oh, crap!”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought.” He messed up Derek’s hair. “Well, I’m here. You’re here. And we’re going.” Then Boone cocked a brow, looking at me. “They’re showing Top Gun at that retro cinema on Peel.”

It was a running joke between them. As a kid, Boone had been obsessed with that movie and had made everyone call him Maverick. He’d forced Derek to watch the movie every time Derek had slept over at our place.

“Oh, looks like you’re seeing Top Gun this afternoon,” I teased Derek.

“That’s fine,” he retorted with a smirk. “Through the years, I started picking up on the homoerotic subtext in the movie and I quite enjoy it now.”

Boone scowled at us. “What homoerotic context?”

“Never mind.”

But as they were leaving, Boone was still pestering Derek about this new revelation, and with a smile, I watched them step out.
