Chapter 70

Without loosening his grip, he lowered himself to his knees. Michelle was silent behind him, and he hoped JT was seeing to her. He hoped she wasn’t slipping away. They still needed to talk. He needed to tell her so many things, but the silence weighed on him and made his task even more terrible.

“Margurite Porete begged you for mercy, didn’t she?”

Something twisted in Foster’s face before he turned his head away. “Sometimes a man has to do what he must. Even if he’d rather not.”

“You’re right.” Jesse swallowed. “I’m not going to make you beg me. You don’t even have to ask. Go back to Texas, Foster. Go take care of your home.”

Foster opened his mouth as if to speak. Jesse silently swore if Foster asked for the hurlbat back, he’d decapitate him anyway. The words didn’t come. Foster simply exhaled and vanished.

“Get over here, Jess,” JT said.
