Chapter 76

Her warm hand circled the wrist of the hand holding the hurlbat, and she guided him gently to the nearest bench, prompting him to set down the weapon. Hers went next to it, and she pulled him to the opposite end in order to sit.

“I thought it might be something like that,” she said once they were situated. “And I know it’s not the same. I’m not her, and you’re not him, but we kind of are. Do you know what I mean?”

“Yeah.” She still held his wrist, her fingers warm bands around his skin. “You’re a lot like what I remember of her. It’s easy to forget that you’re not, you know? Too easy.”

His last words made her withdraw, a loss he instantly regretted. “And I’m doing the wrong thing again, aren’t I? I’m just making it harder for you when you have to leave.”
